Goodbye Mrs Byrne!

Hello,

What a week!

We have been busy with our science, doing an experiment to see if we threw a beanbag or a cushion, which one would go further? We used metre sticks to measure and we all had a throw (under arm) and all stood in the same place to make it a fair test. We found out that the beanbag went further, it was a little bit heavier and easier to throw.

We also did games this week and practised our ball skills. We are getting very good at our ball skills!

We all loved party day, making delicious Easter nests which we had as a special treat the next day. Mr Marvel came to visit us, and we absolutely LOVED it! He was brilliant and we all had a fantastic time. We also ate a delicious cake to say goodbye to Mrs Byrne.

We have been doing lots of lovely Easter art activities this week including; bunny puppets, Easter colouring, egg watercolours, making flowers, printing, making chicks to name but a few.

We also learnt about the Easter story during RE. We made Easter cards and thought about the symbols of Easter (New life/new beginnings) We also had a special RE treat, hot cross buns! We spoke about the different parts of the hot cross bun and what they all meant.

The star award this week is going to Isabelle for always taking pleasure in her learning and always trying her best. Well done Isabelle.
Plop will be flying home with Mrs Carey for a rest and a bath over the Easter holidays.

Today has been a wonderful celebration. We were able to surprise Mrs Byrne with some special presents and cards that we all worked hard to make. We sung some very special songs to show Mrs Byrne how much we love her. We will miss you Mrs Byrne, we hope you have a wonderful retirement and we look forward to you coming to visit us, lots of love from Oak Class xxx

Eddie the Penguin

Hello,

What a week! We hope you had as much fun as we did watching our Year One play 'Eddie the Penguin Saves the World!' Thank you for the wonderful costumes, they were great. Well done year one on a fantastic production.

We have also been busy with our Maths this week. We have been measuring centimetres using a ruler. We have also been exploring weight and weight objects in grams. We finished our Maths this week by exploring capacity and how many cups filled different size containers.

In English we have been looking at non-fiction texts. We have been reading non-fiction texts and non-chronological reports. We learnt some facts about space and recorded them with subheadings. We then used laptops and computers to find an image on creative commons and print it off and put it in our reports.
In creative writing we thought about a story based around 'space'. We watched some clips from space and used our imagination to create some fantastic stories.

Today has been sports relief day and we have been doing skipping, tennis skills, ball games and dancing together with Beech class. We then went for a run around the playground. We were exhausted! Thank you for your donations.

This weeks star award is going to Brooke for always having a good attitude towards her learning.Well done Brooke.

Plop, our learning owl, is spending the weekend with Noah C. Noah sang beautifully in our year one play, and has persevered with his learning. Well done Noah!

Science Week

Hello,

A wonderful week of science. We have been learning about the human body and naming internal and external parts of the body. We looked at lungs and ribs, the brain, our bladder and we also learnt that our heart is about the size of our fist.

We used our senses to hear and see things as well as taste different things that were sweet, salty and sour. We felt different things and described them and we had some smelling pots. Some things smelt lovely and fresh like the lemon and mint, some other things smelt quite strong, like the coffee.

In science we also used our DT skills to make our very own reptiles. We made these just using card squares and they were amazing. Some had long legs, some had short legs, others had long bodies, some had baby reptiles! They were all fantastic and we had a great time making them.

In Maths this week we have been looking at number patterns, 2's, 5's and 10's. We are all experts at counting in 10's to 100 and back again but we are still practising our 2's and 5's. We have used number lines, 100 squares, coins, diennes and other maths manipulatives to help us.

We have been hard at work practising our year 1 play, Eddie the Penguin saves the world. Thank you so much for all the costumes that have come in - we had a dress rehearsal today and all the children looked great. We can't wait for you to see it next week.

In Dance we used scarves to create our own dances listening to different styles of music. We thought about how the music made us feel and how we could move our bodies in time to the music.

Unfortunately our photocopier is not working at the moment, so we have been unable to print off the home learning stickers. The home learning is to 'choose a country to research, record facts in your own way'.

This week our star of the week is Ryley for looking after himself and other children.

Plop, our learning owl is flying home Eadie for taking responsibility learning her lines and being fantastic in the rehearsals.

Reminders:
We are performing Eddie and the Penguin on Tuesday 20th March at 14:15.
Parent consultations are taking place on Wednesday 21st March and Thursday 22nd March.

We hope you have a lovely weekend

Book week and fun in space

Hello,

We have had a lot of fun today as we got our treat after earning 40 marbles! So we spent some time together having a piece of cake and watching a short film. We have worked hard and really deserved it!

Because of the snow day last week, we missed our book day, so today we have been wearing our character hats, and they are all amazing. We have some fantastic artists in Oak class.

During Maths we have been focusing on money, recognising the coins and working on making different amounts. We wrote number sentences adding different amounts of money together and also had fun in a shop buying some different items and thinking about all the different ways we could make a different amount.

In English this week we have been looking at non-fiction books. We thought about the different features; contents page, index, labels and captions and the content of the books. We also looked at a non-chronological report. This is a report (information) that is not in the right order.

We had an amazing time on Thursday afternoon at the astrology workshop, where we travelled through space and looked at the stars, some of them were in different shapes. We learnt in takes 4 days to get to the moon. We also saw the northern lights as well as exploring rocks from a volcano.

This weeks star award is going to Luella for taking responsibility in the mornings. Well done Luella!

Our learning owl plop is flying home with Jessica for always trying her best and for her lovely presentation. Well done Jessica!

Next Week:
Film night on Friday 16th from 5;15-6:15
Fun run designs entry closes on Monday 12th

We hope you all have a lovely weekend,

Love Oak Class
